Photos: My Walk to Work
On 7 August 2003 I had to walk to work instead of bicycle, so I
thought I'd document the trip. It's such an ordinary party of my day,
and yet the sights and the feel of the trip will probably someday be a
subject of nostalgia for me: the neighborhood will change and I will
move on.
My rule was that I had to take at least one picture per block. Some
blocks I took more. After a few blocks I realized that what caught my
eye was buildings and flowers more than people. (I wonder what that
says about me.) But once I started thinking to include people, I was
surprised at how few there were.
In University City it was late morning, and so maybe most people had
gone wherever they were going. And it's a university quarter in
August.
But in the evening I walked to an appointment at 16th and Walnut and
again found the sidewalks largely empty. Of course, I saw people on
the sidewalks, but when I looked through the lens of my camera, I
realized just how sparse the human population of my city's sidewalks
really was.
Anyway, here I share my walk from home to Korman Center at Drexel
University, and then from Korman to 16th and Walnut.
The script I use to assemble these sorts by time, but chooses
arbitrary order within the same minute, so a few times a second
picture ("this again") comes before the "this" in question. I also
allowed myself to cross and recross the street if I liked the view
better. My normal view is from a bicycle in the center of the street,
so I didn't think this was cheating too much.
Enjoy this little piece of my home town on this one overcast day.
