[ stephane stair aragon Sat-10-Jul-2004 10:39:40 ]
The escalier du roi d'Aragon, carved into the calcite cliffs, leads from the citadel (the haute ville) to a well at the base of the cliff near the ocean. The 187 steps are uneven and the site of so many makes the walk psychologically harder than it would be otherwise. (But we are brave hikers of the GR20. They caused us no problem.)
The stairs are said to have been carved in a single night as part of a failed invasion by the Aragonese in 1420, but apparently they existed even before this.
